Why am I awake at 3am?

Are you wide awake at 3am, staring at the clock and wondering how in the world are you going to make it through the day tomorrow?

You've read all the books and podcasts about your kids' sleep, but yours? That's a puzzle you haven't been able to solve yet.

You’ve gone to bed earlier, you’ve tried to stop watching TV, you don’t use your phone. Maybe there’s something waking you up, like pain, needing to pee, another household member moving, the dog, a slight breeze, and once you’re up you are UP. You stare at your partner who is snoring away peacefully and then you stare at the ceiling thinking how are they asleep and not me? Or maybe you get into bed and your brain turns ON, while everyone in the house settles your mind is awake.

That doesn’t even begin to describe your day. You wake up, get the morning going, find something to cover those dark eye circles, get the most coffee you can find, and you have to go about your day. You snap at your friend, you’re irritable with the nice but slow moving coworker, you forget that you were supposed to bring snack to basketball, you’re just too tired to keep all the balls in the air. You worry constantly that this little sleep, so broken, can’t be good for your health. You’d do anything to just get good sleep for 1 night.

Insomnia Expert Rhode Island

Insomnia is the most common sleep problem, with 1 in 4 adults having insomnia at some point in their life. Women are more than 40% more likely than men to get insomnia.

Insomnia is difficulty falling or staying asleep for more than 3 nights a week for 3 months or more. It can be caused by anything from a schedule shift, life transition, hormones, stress, anxiety, trauma.

The good news? There is an evidence-based treatment for insomnia.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for insomnia is the #1 recommended treatment by many organizations, like the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. It works better than any medication or supplement over the long term with no pesky side effects (or labs, or prescription refills needed). CBT for insomnia is a 6-8 session treatment--pretty short in comparison to how long you've struggled with sleep.

Now for the most important question: will it work for you?

I can't say that without talking to you, but I can tell you that CBT for insomnia is a an incredibly well tested and evidence-based treatment. And yes, this treatment has worked with women! Women who are pregnant, women in perimenopause, menopause, moms, women with pain, trauma, stress, it's worked for them.

I am CBT for insomnia expert. I have helped hundreds of patients with insomnia. I have also trained over 800 clinicians in brief CBT for Insomnia and consult nationally.
